David Stock taught English at Scotland’s oldest private school, Loretto, for 19 years from September 1972. In November 1991 he discovered that bullying and abuse were happening within the school, some of this violence was sexual. He investigated and raised the alarm. The response of the school was later recorded by the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry as follows:
The school’s reaction to a member of staff trying to prompt the headmaster to address bullying in 1991 was to dismiss the staff member and focus on protecting the school’s reputation.
He was dismissed, silenced, and smeared.
